Catherine Palace in Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo)
The Catherine Palace is located in the town of Pushkin on the outskirts of Saint Petersburg. It is also called Tsarskoye Selo and is translated as the Tsar's Village.
It is the most luxurious and grandiose palace in the suburbs of Saint Petersburg. The palace is named in honour of its founder and first owner Catherine the First, the wife of Peter the Great. After her death her daughter the Empress Elizabeth rebuilt it in the Russian Baroque style.
To this day the palace surprises with the main decoration of carved and gilded wood. More than 100 kilos of gold were used to gild the interiors: the Great Hall with numerous mirrors, the Gala Dining Room with its orecious German porcelain and legendary Amber Room decorated with wonderful panels. The Amber Room is a unique interior. There are no analogues in the world. The palace is surrounded by a beautiful park where it is very pleasant to walk after seeing the interiors.
It is recommended to combine the visit to the Catherine Palace with the visit to Pavlovsk. Pavlovsk is the residence of Paul the First, son of Catherine the Great, which is located about 6 km from Pushkin.
